SOLSTICE sol•stice noun

Either of the two times each year when the sun is at its greatest distance from the equator. The word "solstice" is derived from the Latin sol ('sun') and sistere ('to stand still'), because at the solstices, the Sun's declination appears to "stand still".

At the Summer Solstice (around June 20–21) the Earth's tilt towards the sun is at its maximum. That is the longest day of the year and marks the beginning of summer. Winter Solstice (around December 21–22) is when Earth's tilt is away from the sun and is at its maximum. It brings the shortest day of the year and marks the official start of winter.
